I think one of the biggest factors of monopolies like facebook, google etc is the patents that are commonly used. Not only do they introduce incompatibility, between technologies they also contribute to economic monopoly and on the world stage. The ideal patents are those that would have an expiration date, with no possibility of renewal. But unfortunately, I am an idealist :)
