App stores are solutions to problems created by abstractions.

Remove the abstraction: Kill the app store.

To be fair, it also helps discoverability.

A no-store of just showing apps known to them but linking to the original source rather than directly installing them would be a better solution; no monetary incentive and the authors are sourced properly.

Distribution is logistics. Discoverability is manipulable and shapes individuals and thus groups.

I was thinking about the possibility of having a network distribution of apps instead of a centralized, company controlled app store. But I don't think we're quite there yet. Either from an implementation perspective, as well as the world not being ready for such a thing. Yet.
