Historical context matters.

The federal use of eminent domain has existed since the founding era.

Ownership has never been an absolute shield.

Own or not, no one has ever been entirely “safe.”

#Poverty has always existed. What’s changed is visibility—due to the #internet and a #globally connected society.

Is #greed making things worse? Yes.

Has it been doing so for centuries? Also yes.

Fast fashion exists because it is created *and* consumed.

It’s also worth remembering why many people originally came to North America:

religious persecution was a major driver.

These contradictions were acknowledged even at the founding.

John Hancock wrote to George Washington on July 6, 1776, reflecting on ideals many embraced in theory but struggled to uphold in practice—particularly equality, liberty, and fundamental rights.

So, about hypocrisy?

In Australia if you don't pay rates for your land they send the police to arrest you, the land is seized and sold incredibly cheap, usually to a bank, to cover the unpaid rates.

Sounds very similar to #USA … do they continue to raise the rates to force people out? Genuinely asking, I can research more.

Sadly, we don’t own property in #America — we rent it from the state until someone richer wants it.

Eminent domain is just the legal paperwork that makes the theft feel polite.
