This game flopped on release yet all I hear every few years is how they’re adding content and how it’s actually good.

They certainly underdelivered upon release there is no arguing that. But the CEO committed to continue developing NMS, no matter what and I'd say today NMS is pretty much what it was meant to be upon release.
It's also cheap these days. Currently on sale for just 25 funny money bucks.
