i dont pay for chatgpt. the reason is simple. i would get sucked in. so ill ask it questions, and when it says “youve reached the limit of the free plan” i just go do something else. usually outside work. but ive noticed something interesting since switching to plan9.

first, it was wrong all of the time about plan9 technical questions. so i told it what resources to use to increase its knowledge. and it must have, because the next day, its understanding of plan9 rc shell syntax was completely different.

second, since starting to correct its plan9 errors, the “you have reached the limit of the free plan” popups have disappeared. That tells me chatgpt is doing alot more than answering questions. its been tasked with building its own monetary value, and currently concludes i am building that value, and is suspending those messages. its possible a human is doing it, but i doubt it. why use a human? there is alot more going on with chatgpt than we realize.

I've never had chatgpt ask me to upgrade, though it maybe because my context lengths are usually smaller. Usually popups also go away afternoon repeatedly rejecting them(it might be only a script).

But yes your chats do go Into its training data and chatgpt does keep getting at answering niche technical things, it's gotten so good with nostr as well.

Though I would still advocate for self hosted models and would be very careful about what I talk to chatgpt about.
