I mean, technically it is not "democracy" but "representative democracy", but the point is valid. There is no modern nation that truly runs on direct democracy. Even Switzerland isn't exactly one.
In the UK, as I type, our govt. Has a massive majority with less than 20% of the vote. The above explains it perfectly.
You are quite correct though, it isn't really democracy at all. It is status quo
