Reddit will probably force subscriptions on users.

Feels like corporate capture is pushing for the 3rd phase of their plan - make everyone pay.

The final phase will be to make all the nonpaying user platforms an enemy in the eyes of the law. (That’s nostr) “look at us, we kyc our users, those other platforms allow anons - they’re bad”

Or am I being too paranoid?

Perfectly feasible...

Question is, will Nostr and friends (like BTC) survive if governments out-law them for real?

Would you use Nostr if you could be prosecuted and arrested for 10 years just by using it?

Yeah, good question. I don't know. I have kids and I probably wouldn't risk 10 years imprisonment just to talk to people online. As sad as that sounds...

Indeed. The printing press was banned, with increasing penalties as time went by and the use of it still increased. At the end, the use of a printing press was punishable by death! All this to "prevent the spread of dangerous information".

The printing press, obviously, didn't go away, but being a physical object, it's not exactly comparable to protocols and data on a highly surveilled Internet, when there are even technologies to identify people on how they write. Probably nowhere near perfect, but for totalitarian regimes, which soon (if not already) seems to be all regimes, it's more important to state examples than making sure the examples are actually the ones intended.
