Science became a subset of economy. So "follow the science" implies "follow the money". (Which is always a good idea if you are interested in truth).

The problem with the likes of PhDs is they are too narrowly focused on their chosen subject, and seem to be unaware that the universe is an extremely complex system. Any intervention can have unintended second order consequences.

IMHO the dependency of research on funding, leads to a bias in the results that are published and more important the things that are researched at all.
