There’s a grocery store in my neighborhood that’s basically a large bodega. They take advantage of poor people by charging much higher prices for staples like milk, cereal, and produce than you’d find a chain like Trader Joe’s or even Whole Foods. However, sometimes you can discover a real find if you look on the right shelf. I’ve never seen these items in any other store, they’re inexpensive, and they’re delicious. 🌶️

hmmm 🤔, which is?

wrong answers only

Small urban grocery/food market, often run by Latinos, Arabs, or other immigrants in the US

Knowing approximately where you are, where I used to live and work with retail + restaurants… I bet the markup on “normal” brands & items mostly comes from the distributors.

Maybe some of it, but I’ve caught them cheating on their prices more than once. I’ll see a price on something that rings up $2 higher at the register, and then I’ll tell them that wasn’t the price on the shelf. They’ll try to give me a hard time but then I’ll just step out of line and go find it and take a photo of the price sticker. Then the next time I go back I see they’ve raised the price on the shelf. So they’re either doing this on purpose to gouge people or they’re just really incompetent at price labeling.

lol yeah. I’ve definitely experienced that too… it’s the wild west within their own store. But for sure they pay much higher cost to distributors

Makes sense since they don’t have the volume discounts available to larger chains but either way it’s poor people who end up hurt by this since they’re not usually the ones with Costco memberships.

Yes… but generally it’s less wealthy ppl (relative to larger competitors) who own these small shops & restaurants. Often these businesses are struggling as much as their patrons.

Also I’m not fully defending the business owners… I have witnessed many times “wealthy looking” or just “white” people being charged more 😂

No easy solution

Plus… the rents and taxes there ☠️☠️☠️

cholula is the best
