I also heard him use two other metaphors which he probably modernized to make the phone and revolving door ones…

When crossing a river with a raft, once you cross the river you leave the raft on the shore… you don’t go carrying it around with you.

When using a rock to bang on door to get let in… you put the rock back down, you don’t carry it in with you. Probably an old Buddhist saying.

You clearly know your Alan Watts. The rock thing is interesting tho. I may have never knocked on a door using a rock... 😅
