One the reasons there is such an overlap between traditionally "evangelical" Christianity and conservative politics is that both take as a given the fallenness and corruption of mankind.

"Power tends to corrupt; absolute Power corrupts absolutely" and all that.

Unfortunately there are a lot of professing Christians who put more faith in being saved by Republican politicians than in being saved by Jesus and who put honoring the flag above making Jesus absolute sovereign.
