Your point about statistics reminds me of something my father used to say about tests.

When facing a challenge with a success rate of 1 in 10, the odds tell you only the best of the best will make it.

But consider that out of the 10 contestants, 2 signed up but won’t show up, 2 are not qualified to begin with, 2 won’t have studied seriously, and 2 will let nerves get the better of them. The real success rate you should be considering is the one out of the contestants who show up, prepared and determined. Now you are a lot closer to 100%.
