What about new users, totally green, who never heard of lightning before ?

Nostr is open and everyone can do what they want. Personally I think it’s fine to have rate limited public relays for noobs. For folks who have been around a while and want to use Nostr regularly I’m guessing paid relays will be the primary way forward. It’s just not sustainable or a good UX to accept limitless spam from anyone.
5 events an hour though. 4 likes and 2 replies and you’re already over the limit….Seeing a lot of users talk about this. Not sure 5 is necessarily the right number.
But I agree with you about paid relays. I’ve been using them for more than a year now
Yeah I mean ultimately the flip side is how much bandwidth and storage do you expect Will to pay out of pocket, not even counting his time and headache dealing with these spammers. I’d just flip the framing and ask why do you expect him to work for you for free? Fundamentally folks have to be okay with some sort of fees in nostr if we don’t want to fall down the creepy tracking and selling your data ad model path. If you don’t want to pay a fee to help support the platform and mitigate spam then limits are just a reality.
I don’t expect him to work for free. I’m on Damus Purple for a year. Maybr in the future there will be no rate limiting for Purple subscribers
For sure. I’m not trying to “come at you”, just explain my own personal mental model. Appreciate all Damus subscribers. I assume Purple subscribers will eventually have no or very high limits.
I totally get your point. If you would have asked me last year, I would have thought that most relay usage would be on paid relays and paid services. Man, I was so wrong. Seems to me like a lot of npubs think everything should be “free”. Even the mere sight of the word onlyzap brings some into a frenzy 😂

100% same. I think people are so stuck in the “free” by selling your personal data model, that we do need Nostr noob options that are free with limits and serve as on-ramps to paid relays and subscriptions. If you have to pay to even get in started then it feels like nostr won’t scale until people are aggressively burned by current mainstream options.
Agreed. Makes sense 🤝
