I did wonder if putting catnip in the corner somewhere would keep them in that area, but I don't really want to attract them. I'm trying to keep them away.

Fair enough, just a thought… cats really don’t like citrus so might be worth trying lemon juice?

I have these repellent pellets that are showing up in the mail today. They're supposed to be full of smells that cats don't like, but they have extremely mixed reviews, so we'll see.
