I simply don’t understand what that has to do with trusting it though. Do you mean that you don’t trust the lightning protocol? If I have a Lightning node with a private channel that I only use for payments, it requires little to no maintenance. I have the ability to unilaterally “close the channel” which simply sends my portion of the sats from the multisig address to a different address. What is there not to trust. There is nothing magical about lightning. Bitcoin never leaves the chain. You either have the keys or you don’t, and if you run your lightning node then you have the keys to the addresses associated with your channels.
