Drosophila species are extensively used as model organisms in genetics, cell biology, biochemistry, and especially developmental biology. These fruit flies are very well reaserched and help better understand a myriad of chemical mechanisms.

Therefore, extensive efforts are made to sequence drosphilid genomes.
