trying to give a name to a repeating phenomenon.

examples:

the tiny house was invented to create affordable housing using minimal materials, and bypassing code restrictions. The first tiny home was built for $800.

today, tiny home builders charge as much as $120000+

Buckminster Fullers dome home design was intended to provide affordable housing using minimal materials.

Now some dome homes sell for millions.

the Earthship design was intended to use waste and available materials to reduce costs resulting in a self sufficient home. now, building an earth ship is incredibly expensive.

the system absorbs solutions to its restrictions into itself.

call it systemic absorption?

you could call it capitalism

too many definitions of that word. people use it to mean whatever they want it to mean to reinforce their chosen ideology. its a nonsense word now.

Just call it scope creep. Seems similar enough. Idk. People started out building the small homes to save money. Then rich people caught onto the fad and made it popular, but didn’t want to live with “minimal materials.” They wanted a bunch of cool shit. After all, they just thought the dome looked cool, they didn’t actually give a shit about the idea of affordable housing anyways…

I’m sure it would be possible to build the same scaled back, minimalist material small home for the inflation adjusted $800. Maybe?

It's up to everyone to "make something" out of an idea. The people who do, are the ones who define the outcome. They are also, almost by definition, the successful people. So, rich people define the outcome, because who defined the outcome, becomes rich.
