I don't understand the auctions. If I bid more does my share of rewards also go up? Or does the pool just have more hash?

When you win, yes and yes 🙌 any high bid goes towards bonus hash. (And you always gain more reward via auctions than direct buy). Direct buy gets you a fair split on total hashrate.
