Reality check: The EU’s Chat Control compromise is no retreat — this supposedly “voluntary” model opens the door to mass surveillance by individual states and therefore undermines our anonymous communication.

EU governments approved measures that pave the way for:

👁️ Mass surveillance without warrants

🪪 Universal ID requirements (goodbye anonymity)

🛑 Digital restrictions without new digital IDs — effectively digital exclusion from society

🔜 Chat Control isn’t dead — it’s being revived in a new form.

What the EU Council backed today is a Trojan horse: by cementing so-called “voluntary” mass scanning, it normalizes warrantless, error-prone surveillance of Europeans’ private messages by major (mostly US) platforms and ties it to digital-ID age-verification schemes that risk destroying online anonymity.
