I’m no longer interested in letting machines or 3rd parties with no information about me creating lists of anything for me. I want to organically find new people and topics to follow and let things play out as they would offline. If that means I don’t make any friends, that is on me. But at least I don’t have to worry about Nostr becoming Twitter or Facebook. I understand onboarding refugees from other networks, especially those who are less technically inclined, is an important problem to solve, but I don’t think cloning the experience they are looking to escape is the answer.

I definitely sympathize with that, and don't necessarily disagree. In this post I'm thinking more broadly than the addictive, infinite scroll feeds of yore though. There are lots of forms of legacy publishing, and one form of "custom feed" might be better for one type than another.

I like the earthquake alert feed I created on coracle.
Custom feeds can be also be carefully and manually crafted by the owner, this is the basic and obvious option I envisioned and talked about after the Eternal December that blew up the Global and our following lists as well.
If a list is good enough that the owner updates and follows it, it could be a good inspiration for his followers, so it can be easily forked and personalized; maybe the clone could also check for "upstream updates" from the original one and treat them as suggestions to merge.
