Not sure about anything related to our origins but my objective analysis of the situation I find myself living in is that as sentient beings within this living system we have a responsibility to nurture it.
What would confer this responsibility? The mere fact that we are sentient?

Indeed. The awareness of the consequences of our actions.
But if we're all going to die anyway, and if the universe is inevitably going end in heat death in few billion years (if something else doesn't interfere before then), what's the use?
