Interesting. I have always felt a slight discomfort with people that say how humble they are. This explains why.

True humility probably doesn't consider itself humility as it is a natural state.

I always come back to this really good quote from the movie KINGDOM OF HEAVEN

“Holiness is in right action, and courage on behalf of those who cannot defend themselves. And goodness - what God desires - is in your head and heart and by what you decide to do every day you will be a good man...or not.”

Oh! Yes, we can choose to do good that we understand to be good.

I actually never heard of "The Screwtape Letters." I am thinking about reading it. Thank you for your note.
