I've been rewatching it.

In one episode Oliver North is going to visit Francis military school. The head of the school wants the boys to sing candy man for him.

Totally went over my head before that they were singing Candy Man for the guy who sold cocaine to fund the Contras. Definitely the most blatant political statement I've noticed in the show.

Wow that’s crazy I had no idea as a kid. I thought it was just a dorky song and didn’t think much of it.

I just remembered at the end of the song, Spangler says you can even eat the dishes. What does that mean?

The song was originally in Willy Wonka. That is why the implication of the candy man being a drug dealer doesn't fit the lyrics perfectly.

I still think they meant it as a drug dealer implication in Malcolm in the Middle. Francis explicitly says "Isn't he a convicted felon?" Spangler replies "he was acquired" and another student interjects "so was I but I'm still here"

Also plenty of other dorky songs they could have had them sing instead.

The song is stuck in my head now lmao

Yea that is for sure who they were referring to. There is no way it was an accident lol
