People were outraged that they had to pay the church 1/10th of their income, but now everybody just casually accepts giving 50% of their income to the state. A bit mind boggling just how domesticated we've become.

Precisely. Its hard to even discuss these things with people because their baseline assumption of the world is only slightly better than slavery.
The idea of true freedom for people to live their lives without being told what and what not to do is completely foreign to most people nowadays.
