there is definitely that incentive for clients, but no one is taking advantage of that yet
People would just use FOSS clients that donāt show ads.

True, I guess some people would use feature rich and well supported ad based clients. Kind of like choosing photoshop over GIMP, or windows over Linux
many people want their hand held with tech/apps
