I do understand that printing money is an easy way how have large scale war for long periods of time. I'm still not sure that it is the necessary requirement for big and lengthy conflicts to exist.

approx 1m civilians over a century caused by indirect causes (mostly famine and diseases)

vs.

10m direct civilian casualties caused by bombing, starvation and displacement in 4 years.

before the wars were financed by debt it was limited mostly to professionals. civilians were mostly neutral.
