Bering Strait Cold War

The Diomede Islands, located in the Bering Strait, are the closest points between the United States and Russia, separated by only about 2.4 miles (3.8 km). Big Diomede, a Russian military outpost, and Little Diomede, home to a small Inupiat community in Alaska, became symbolic of the Cold War's division, often referred to as the "Ice Curtain". During the Cold War, the border was sealed, preventing contact between families on the two islands, creating a stark separation between the two nations despite their proximity. The islands remain a potent symbol of the geopolitical rift, with the International Date Line running between them, making them a full day apart in time.
