Yeah, need to think about this carefully as the verification bar is rightly high on OSM.
We have some ideas to streamline this though.

*BTW I'd be curious what happened with the "Square Merchant Directory" from 2012.
It would be great to revive it, make it public, add flags for accepting Bitcoin, Location (physical/online) and let devs to create new discovery methods and channel all the traffic to you and your merchants.
