The process of "locking it down" does not end when you put a ring on her finger and a baby in her belly.

Men must constantly test, challenge, and deepen their woman's loyalty to their household and vision.

Subsequently, women must (and do naturally) test the worthiness of their champion over the course of life.

They want the best deal they can get. When men give them unlimited freedom and independence instead of doing the above, women (rightfully) assume their man is no champion at all, but a weak pair bonder.

To salvage the situation and their time, they will convert the man to a sponsor while providing the emotional support the man apparently needs in order to survey the outside world for a better deal.

This is the hard truth.
