Very true. Big difference between real, everyday people and what the politicians talk about. There's a reason they stomped out the 99% protest on Wall Street - they need us divided.
Through the lense of history though, people tend to get more radical during cultural periods like this.
The 1919 Bolshevik revolution and the rise of Hitler in 1930s Germany are two very important periods of history which can be used to better understand today.
We are currently in a reactionary backlash to the past few decades of progressive policies. Trump used to be a democrat, so in the grand scheme of things he is much closer to a moderate, and is likely a controlled asset.
But if history is any indicator, the rise of a 'New Left' post-Trump is nothing to be looking forward to.
