Clients are the weak point that they will attack, but its also the strong point, as long as there's not just one client that everybody uses.
NGL I'm really like Bija. Hosted on my laptop, PK is encrypted on disk. No global feed yet but I see all the stuff from people I follow. You could set it up on a Pi via docker and use it on your LAN. I havent tryed it but it should be fairly simple to set it up so it can be viewed via Tor or I2P as well for access while your away.
