Need some help on a seed storage idea. I was inspired by a post on reddit by user u/pskindlefire where he stamped letters into an electrical box cover and thought I would try it myself. Way harder than it seems to get deep letters stamped in and wanted to try to combine it with the ease of nostr:npub1az9xj85cmxv8e9j9y80lvqp97crsqdu2fpu3srwthd99qfu9qsgstam8y8 seedplate idea with a center punch to etch letters but in braille. It is made out of galvanized steel and not stainless so I may need nostr:npub17u5dneh8qjp43ecfxr6u5e9sjamsmxyuekrg2nlxrrk6nj9rsyrqywt4tp to do some tests. The reddit user mention above did a basic test and it looks solid so far even with the fire burning off the zinc coating and corrosion after 2 years looks good. Below is just a rough example showing spacing. Could easily give it more room for legibility and a separate plate for passphrase could have some very long unique words. Yes this is more complex but stamping letters deep enough is not easy. Some words I put in the photo below are not actual words.
Pros - cost (1k sats per plate) is great for multi plate backups like SeedXOR, seed splitting, separate plates for
24word seed and passphrases etc.
-works great for passphrases with non standard 39 words (most seedplates only work for 4 letters)
-24 words can easily fit on side of plate
-can be purchased anywhere
-probably a good idea to keep a paper copy with written words with each plate. Ideally the plate is only
necessary incase of fire or flood.
-really easy to overwrite if seed needs to be destroyed
- can be hidden in plain site and used as an electrical box cover. Not Recommended by me.
Cons - need braille alphabet to recover. easy to find online
- numbers might not work as they match the first 9 letters (numbering 1-24 or for the passphrase)
-not as easy to translate as NVK's seedplate or u/pskindlefire method
- might be too confusing for next of kin
-probably more but I would love some input
- could be translated upside down accidentally but the error would be noticed when the words make no sense
