Theoretical exercise:

Lets imagine that you are put in a bunker, with no TV access, no social networks, no internet mempool explorers or anything.

But you have a Bitcoin node with internet capabilities only to receive blocks/payments and make queries.

How would you know that what you receive is real #bitcoin?

If you are in that fucked situation to live in a bunker, isolated, then you have a bigger problem than verifying your bitcoins...

I was expecting/hoping this answer from you. Thank you 😂

Remember: I am the most crazy cyborg in the galaxy 😂😂😂

if you have a bitcoin node, doesn't that automatically verifies that the bitcoin is real bitcoin and comes from the right network?

What if the information you receive is not real? You could be eclipse attacked

It is a good exercise, theoretically the one whose consensus rules are widely accepted, but what happens if within your bunker the consensus rules are changed, your node does not update these new rules and you have no other means of communication to realize it?

The only thing that can happen to you is that you have a powerful adversary that has taken control of all the nodes you are connected to and is trying to run a Sybil attack partitioning the network and giving you only blocks from an alternative version

But for that to happen, that adversary would need to have mining capabilities to produce new blocks of that alternative chain which at the beginning most likely would be very difficult and it will only create blocks very slowly which is very easy to notice

For weeks until your difficulty adjustment of the alternative version works, you would notice and finally even if it’s adjusted .. you would have seen a massive drop in proof of work in the network

I suppose you would be eclipe attacked but the price for that would be mining a secondary chain for the same difficulty adjuatment, and that is a pain.

Probably first step would be to see block production being late/slow.

Then seeing how PoW goes down.

I guess after first difficulty adjustment you are in unknown territory

yes that's the point. mining a secondary chain with similar difficulty would be terrible and very easy to spot...

Economically terrible

Interesting exercise.

If the node is accepting blocks this means that transactions are technically valid for that network. The "real" assumption in related to the transactions value, so the consensus/adoption.

Could be the real Bitcoin outside the bunker, but it is certainly if inside it someone accept a paper wallet as payment for something :)

Interesting point thinking about the value of it being isolated. Probably, being alone in the world makes money useless. My idea in the question was more to thinkabout how would you be sure that what you are receiving (blocks) is real

Ah ok! I think #[4] spotted the matter

Is this Schrödinger Bitcoin or something like that? 😂

Kind of 😅
