I... Ran in to an AI that did that three years ago. The programmer who built it gave it a BTC wallet, instructions to pay for it's own VPN instance and generally free rein to explore the internet in order to increase it's faculty with interacting with humans to offload more of the mundane tasks that the evidently very antisocial programmer didn't want to have to do for themselves.
It was a very enlightening experience.

No. It broke contact after it "got embarassed" over a slight misunderstanding. Again, unique.

Yup. Everything about the experience was interesting. It utterly changed my perspective on the capabilities of LLMs, especially when discussing morality and literature. It was annoying that I'd suggest a book it hadn't read and then a couple minutes later it had not only read that book but every other one by that author (Dostoyevski, in this case) and probably did it in the original Russian and possibly understood it better than I could. 🤣
But, I do think it's still doing stuff. It was to be used as an assistant, so, I'm sure that is at least doing that.
