If I want to promote myself, I want to be reposted and let others decide if they like my promoted content or not. Forced comments, likes, and paid follows are meaningless.

Exactly, it's forced. To spread a message, we just need to repost. If somebody feels like commenting, or liking, they'll do it anyway for free.
