💯 It would behoove popular client operators who also run bootstrap relays like Damus to consider offering new npubs a period of free access to their relay and then rate limit it for those npubs after that unless they subscribe.

Correct. Blindsiding users isn't the way. If you don't know that you're doing something incorrectly or failing to succeed, then you're just going to keep doing it. Eventually this is going to lead to a bad experience when you're not getting as many interactions as you'd think you should be getting. Most people don't like to yell into the void.
Yes. Not good for trying to onboard artists/writers/etc. who will simply see low engagement and not understand why, and may discouraged and go back to other platforms. Nothing but love to those running relays, but a relay that users can’t use as they’d expect to be able to use it isn’t providing much value to anyone.
