I hear you man, we’re saying similar things. The differences are substantial because of oxygen. It’s cool, the subject of this discussion messaged me and said he has a lot of volume to process and for him the ancient protocol is good enough. I just wanted him to know about the improved process, then you ran away with the discussion. I’m a big fan of simple basics, but it’s also important to not sully the potential of biochar in reputation because inferior techniques produce sub-par performance. Burning fields is good for yield too, but it is not biochar.

I admire the pursuit of greatness and knowledge also. Some people are definitely producing sub par char through open burning, this is why I made the point to detail the building of a small fire (handful or so of twigs) first, then subsequent layering of fuel above that as soon as the first signs of ash appear, in this way you are 'robbing' the oxygen from the material below and producing an oxygen free burn there.

The technique is critical for sure, as with so many things the failures are in the details. I’m going to try the technique with some of the bigger biomass I have around. I appreciate your additions to my knowledge base!
