"In 1549, Philipp Melanchthon, a companion of Martin Luther and a harsh critic of Copernicus, was provoked into an incendiary speech: "But certain people, either out of a desire for innovation or to show their cleverness, have concluded that the earth moves. They claim that neither the eighth sphere [the fixed stars] nor the sun rotates... But it shows a lack of honor and taste to publicly express such ideas, the example is dangerous. It is the duty of a good Christian to accept the truth as revealed by God and to trust in it."
