My son was in his basketball playoff game Friday night. He picked up 3 charging fouls, a blocking foul, and 16 points in the first quarter. Hubby told him to not foul out this game so he went the next 3 quarters without a foul, but only 4 points. He was really upset by the outcome.

There are several life lessons in there that have made for some great discussion at our house.

There is a line between being a dick and being competitive. And I don’t know where to draw the line exactly in theory but I can tell which is which when I see one :)

Yep and I do think it’s more obvious in middle school sports than in life.

Two of my son’s charging fouls were questionable at best, but as we told my son, “You sometimes face unfair calls or scrutiny even as an adult. Knowing that and how to NOT respond to it when it happens is a super power.”

I remember a rough game as a kid where 5 players from our team (including me) got fouled off.

We only had 3 left on the court by the end & we copped a trouncing.

That’s rough, and another good discussion with kids about whether you should be more cautious when you have a responsibility to others. Team sports are so great for kids when managed properly.

can be hard to measure in heat of moment but man, those numbers dont lie
