It was called Project Independence with goal of energy self-sufficiency by 1980, 7 years. It failed. It led to the creation of the Emergency Petroleum Allocation Act (price controls) and the Strategic Petroleum Reserve that came online under his successor, Ford.

Vaguely remember that, but not the part about alternative energies… As in alternative physics, well maybe we’ll get to know more the coming years!

Carter got all the “notoriety” for it. But conservation was one of 3 strategies of Nixon and Kissinger’s to get to energy independence.
