In the future, that even technologically could be here now, humans do not need to work 40hrs per week, and many of these port worker jobs do not need to be human operated.

The union quite simply isn’t open to non-human run roles, but this isn’t realistic.

So, what do we do with that? How does society handle this, particularly for those in these rolls and without savings or investments options that allow them to simply not work.

Just tough bc they workers can’t just join another dock for work and their entire lives and careers are gone once automation happens (like port of LA)
