Daily Roman Facts:
Marcus Valerius Corvus received his unique agnomen while on campaign against the Gauls in Northern Italy in 349BC. Prior to a battle a hulking Gallic warrior challenged any man on the Roman side to single combat. With consuler approval Valerius accepted. As the two approached a raven landed on Valerius' shoulder and aided him through the battle by attacking the opponents face and eyes with Valerius ultimately slaying his foe. After the battle was won for Rome Corvus, meaning 'raven' in Latin, was added to his name.
