It's possible that the image hosting site is using a Geo IP based blocker.
So my issue with uploading and seeing images on amethyst seems to be related to vpn. With vpn turned off, no issues. I tried switching vpn location to Germany, and that works for me, I use Mullvad on phone. In case this helps anyone else.
