Question: vexl searches contacts from contacts. Do my contacts need to be vexl users for me to find their contacts that do use vexl? So : me->non-vexlr contact->vexlr-contact ?

Nope even if your common friend doesn't have Vexl it shows connection with that particular person who is second layer for you through your friend.
