If the metal is worth the squeeze, putting your own scales on isn't very difficult.

Pop the plastic off and shape up some pieces of wood, sand and shape to preference. (Tape off the metal blade when working the shank and scales.) I tend to prefer a big fat handle.

My grandfather was a machinist making knives in his day. One of the most comfortable handles I've used was literally just rectangular scales. No shaping.
