Yep, but there are hundreds of profiles without the _@ already. For viewing it must be there.

Are there? Yours is the only one I’ve seen. Other clients strip the “_@“ for display so they look the same unless you look at the raw json.
I only noticed this because nostrudel clearly marks your nip05 in particular as invalid next to your name on every note, then I confirmed on several other clients.
For the record I agree with you that this SHOULD be a reasonable way to enter the root domain for nip05. But that is NOT what the NIP says so it would need clarification to bring this into spec.
Yep, yesterday I counted over 1000 profiles without @ in the nip05. There might be more. My local database is quite small.

Yep, we also do that for those that insert the _@ in the field.
We fix most of this stuff in the UI. Most of the time, it doesn't matter how the Signing app changes the record, Amethyst will fix it locally before displaying. We don't usually send those changes back to relays because we don't want to break the user's experience in the other app he/she is using.
