This is interesting to me, because it’s such an ancient Catholic tradition. Our culture has lost all of this ritual, unfortunately. I’m not sure how much our Protestant churches have ever had such a ceremony. None that I’ve ever participated in. But it’s so practical to ritually assign responsibility should the worst happen to birth parents, like an insurance policy.
