Sadly, America is all about individual rights, freedom, and not having to do anything you don't want to do. The idea of civic responsibility is an alien thought in the US. The concept of duty is only something one runs into if one chances to join the military for some reason. We a country of selfish people concerned about their personal rights, not about obligations and responsibilities. We're a fun loving people and nothing is more important than fun.

There are a lot of different kinds of people. I wouldn't describe gay people that way, but straight people, yes. I wouldn't describe women that way, but men, yes. May be its not about them at all though. May be people who want stuff are like that and the more they want the more like it they become. From outside the US seems to regard stuff above all, certainly above people, above kindness, love, fairness and loyalty.
