They hired me to demo their system and in two pilot record stores. Soon they figured out I could break it pretty fast so I created a position for myself as software tester reporting to the C sweat. Some of the old-school Unix and Dos Dev’s took me under their wing. One in particular Huey was real mentor. I loved that he could have longhair and a beard. Take off to India for three weeks at a time. He used to do magic tricks as a way of relating to people. I had zero coding experience, but he taught me a few things in order to deep dive into the system.
They also had studios where they remastered the CD Roms and I would QC those sometimes. I develop a particular ear for being able to hear music at super fast speed, and still able to detect flaws from the mastering.
Finally through my testing and analysis I discovered that they made some design mistakes early on that were insurmountable. This is after they raise $40 million in early1990 money. So I left which turned out to be a big mistake because it’s stuck around for another year I could have learned a lot more. I’m still in contact with some of the people and very grateful to have been given the experience. 🙏 That changed my life.
