The temple is a tragedy. The government took control in the same way they took over the Buddhist religious organization in China, and its now a Disneyland fake version of what it once was. I mean, the shaolin temple/academy - but a lot of the Buddhist temples too. Worse for the Buddhist temples, actually - they got bulldozed and rebuilt entirely. In both, the ancient lineage of masters is broken. In both, there's a gift shop at the exit. And in both, people walk around eating meat snacks on their tour of it, which is an intentional mockery of the institution.

Yes, unfortunately I had read about this. All the temples in China have lost their autonomy and come under state control. It's very sad.
